Module 2 — Neurodivergence & the Body
Why Standard Deep Tissue Fails These Clients
27 min read
Deep tissue massage has a mechanical logic: apply force, break adhesion, lengthen tissue. This logic fails — sometimes dramatically — for neurodivergent clients. Not because they're fragile, but because their nervous systems process pressure, pain, and proprioception differently.
We'll look at the neurological reasons standard approaches backfire, the client experiences that result (and why they rarely come back after one session), and what a neurodivergent-aware approach looks like instead.
Key Concepts
- The pain paradox: why more pressure often increases bracing
- Interoceptive shutdown and why clients "check out"
- The standard intake form problem
- Building a session structure that doesn't overwhelm
